Extech CA3010 Flexible Rogowski Adapter for 3000 A AC Measurement with a Standard Multimeter: How a 254 mm Bendable Sensor Loop Turns Any Multimeter with an mV Input into a 3000 A Clamp Meter

For standard clamp meters used by electricians, the practical upper limit is 200-400 A. Higher currents (500 A to 3000 A), typical for 3-phase industrial distribution, motor inrush currents and welding current verification, require specialized clamp meters, which typically cost 2,500-8,000 EUR.

The Extech CA3010 solves this elegantly with a RETROFIT ADAPTER CONCEPT: instead of buying a dedicated high-current clamp meter, you extend an EXISTING multimeter with a flexible Rogowski adapter loop.

The Rogowski Principle (Quick Recap)

Rogowski sensors were invented by Walter Rogowski in 1912 and have since been the STANDARD technology for flexible high-current measurement. The sensor loop consists of:

  • A wound copper coil inside a flexible plastic sheath.
  • Integrated active amplifier electronics in the clamp tip.
  • Signal conversion (the Rogowski signal is proportional to the derivative of the current; the electronics integrate it back into the actual current value).
  • Standard banana plugs for connection to the multimeter.

Output: standard 1 mV per ampere, scaled for the three measuring ranges (300 A, 3000 A, …). A multimeter with an mV range reads the current values directly.

Advantages Over Traditional Clamp Meters

1. Compatibility with existing multimeters:

  • Compatible with Fluke 87V, 175, 179, 289.
  • Extech EX330, EX430, EX520.
  • Hioki DT4224, DT4256.
  • YEW 435, 736.
  • Virtually any multimeter with an mV input and banana jacks.

2. No new multimeter required: The technician keeps using their familiar multimeter with all its other measurement functions (V, R, diode, continuity, capacitance), and simply connects the adapter for high-current measurement.

3. Flexible applicability: The 254 mm bendable loop fits around busbars, cable bundles and irregularly shaped cables. Standard rigid clamps only fit around round cables up to the size of the clamp opening.

4. Safety: The 7.5 mm cable diameter fits into tight spaces between live components. Standard clamps are physically too large for crowded switch cabinets.

Three Measuring Ranges

The CA3010 has three switchable measuring ranges:

  • 300 A range: Resolution 0.1 A. For standard motor currents and consumer distribution boards.
  • 3000 A range: Resolution 1 A. For industrial busbars, transformer secondary sides and motor inrush currents.
  • Second intermediate range: Resolution 0.01 A for fine-range measurements.

Switching is done with a knob on the adapter. The multimeter display scales automatically.

Applications Where the Rogowski Adapter Beats a Standard Clamp

Busbar measurement: Power plant transformer secondary sides and industrial distribution boards. Busbars are flat (typically 40×10 mm to 200×20 mm), so standard round clamps don’t fit around them.

Cable bundles: Servicing motor connections with 3-4 parallel cables. The Rogowski coil is looped around the entire bundle to measure the total current.

Motor inrush current: Standard compressor and motor start-ups draw 5-8x the standard rated current for 1-3 seconds. A motor rated at 200 A can have an inrush current of 1000-1600 A.

Welding current: Resistance welding and spot welding draw pulse currents of 5000-30000 A. Standard clamps cannot measure these; a Rogowski adapter combined with an oscilloscope mV input shows the full waveform.

UPS and battery backup verification: Large UPS systems with 500-2000 A DC/AC transmission.

Data center distribution: Verifying PDU output current on busbars.

Vehicle testing: Aftermarket starter and alternator current measurements (up to 2000 A for commercial vehicles).

Photovoltaic installations: Verifying solar string currents on DC busbars.

Wind turbines: Rotor converter output currents (typically 500-1500 A).

Physical Construction

  • Length: 254 mm (10″).
  • Diameter: 7.5 mm.
  • Material: copper winding + PVC sheath.
  • Opening mechanism: one-handed quick release, for placing around live cables.
  • Safety rating: CAT IV (for mains distribution directly at the transformer, up to 1000 V AC).

Safety Aspects

CAT IV certification is the HIGHEST safety category under IEC 61010. This means:

  • Safe for measurements directly at transformer secondary sides.
  • Insulation against short-circuit currents above 100 kA.
  • Impulse withstand against atmospheric overvoltages.
  • Approved for measurements on overhead lines (subject to applicable safety standards).

Standard clamps are typically CAT III (400 V max for distribution boards). For measurements at a transformer secondary side, CAT IV is a WORKING REQUIREMENT.

Electronics Details

The Rogowski signal is proportional to the DERIVATIVE of the current (dI/dt). The electronics in the clamp tip:

  1. Amplify the low-level Rogowski signal (typically 10-100 mV/A for the winding).
  2. Integrate the signal via an operational amplifier with an RC network.
  3. Output signal: 1 mV/A, scaled for the selected measuring range.
  4. Frequency range: 40-1000 Hz (covers 50/60 Hz mains plus higher harmonics).

Batteries: 2× AAA (included). Battery life: approx. 50-100 hours of active measurement.

Calibration Verification

Regular calibration verification is recommended, especially for critical applications:

  • Factory calibration at the time of purchase.
  • Annual verification against a reference current calibrator.
  • NIST-traceable calibration available as an accessory (~200 EUR).

Rogowski sensors typically show ±1-2% accuracy over time. This is sufficient for IT applications. For billing verification (electricity consumption billing), higher precision may be required.

Comparison of High-Current Measuring Instruments

Standard clamp meter up to 400 A (Extech EX520): 200-500 EUR. Not suitable for 3000 A.

Extech CA3010 (this product): 206 EUR. Turns an existing multimeter into a 3000 A measuring system.

Dedicated 3000 A Rogowski clamp meter (Extech PQ3350-1): 62,920 EUR (with power analyzer function). Overkill if you only need current.

Fluke i2500 Rogowski adapter: ~400 EUR. Calibrated for Fluke multimeters. Better accuracy.

Chauvin Arnoux CA5510 Rogowski adapter: ~500 EUR. Rugged, industrial-grade.

Application Recommendations

The CA3010 is the BEST-VALUE tool for occasional high-current measurements. Recommended use:

  • Standard electrical service technicians: You already have a Fluke 87V for daily work. The CA3010 is an add-on for occasional transformer/motor inrush current measurements.
  • HVAC technicians: Verifying large compressor inrush currents (up to 1500 A).
  • Elevator service: Verifying motor inrush current during elevator maintenance.
  • PV installers: Verifying string current during solar installation.
  • Data center technicians: PDU verification on busbars.

NOT recommended for:

  • Continuous data logging (use dedicated power quality analyzers for that).
  • Accuracy requirements better than 1% (Fluke i2500 or better).
  • Very low currents (<10 A) — accuracy below 1% of the measuring range.
